What Is AC Recharge — R-1234yf?

R-1234yf is the newer refrigerant used in most vehicles built from 2017 onward. It's a more environmentally friendly refrigerant with much lower global-warming impact than the older R-134a. R-1234yf costs significantly more than R-134a and requires dedicated service equipment, which is why an R-1234yf recharge is priced higher than an R-134a recharge.

Why It Matters

Just like older systems, modern R-1234yf systems lose charge over time and stop cooling properly. Running the AC with low refrigerant strains the compressor and shortens its life. R-1234yf is also a regulated refrigerant -- it cannot legally be vented to the atmosphere, which is why we use proper recovery equipment for every service.

Signs You Need AC Recharge — R-1234yf

  • AC blows warm or only mildly cool air
  • Cooling fades on long drives or in stop-and-go traffic
  • You can hear the AC compressor short-cycling on and off
  • Defroster is slow to clear humidity from the windshield
  • Vehicle is 2017 or newer and has never had AC service

What We Do

We use dedicated R-1234yf service equipment to recover any remaining refrigerant, pull a deep vacuum on the system, and verify it holds before recharging. We refill with the precise amount of R-1234yf specified by your vehicle's manufacturer and confirm cooling performance with vent-temperature readings. If the system loses charge quickly, we recommend AC Leak Detection to find the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most vehicles built in 2017 and newer use R-1234yf. A few earlier models adopted it sooner. We'll confirm the correct refrigerant for your vehicle when you book.

The refrigerant itself costs much more than the older R-134a, and the service equipment is more expensive. Despite that, our $224.99 special is a $150 discount off the regular $375 price.

We don't recommend it. R-1234yf is regulated, the cans are expensive, and overcharging the system can damage the compressor. Professional service is the right move on these newer vehicles.

Plan on about 60 minutes from drop-off, including evacuation, vacuum hold, and recharge.
