Do You Need Winter Tires in BC?

On signed highways, yes: from October 1. Most signed routes run to April 30, and a few lower ones end March 31. Abbotsford itself is not a signed area, but the signs start about an hour east.

Abbotsford (our shop on 4th Ave)
Lower Mainland: not a designated winter tire area. In town, winter tires are your call.
Highway 1 east through Chilliwack
No winter tire signs through the Fraser Valley.
Hope: the signs start here
Hwy 5 Coquihalla to MerrittOct 1 – Apr 30
Hwy 3 to PrincetonOct 1 – Apr 30
Hwy 1 Fraser CanyonOct 1 – Mar 31
Heading to Whistler instead?
Hwy 99 Sea to SkyOct 1 – Mar 31

Each signed route has a yellow “must use winter tires” sign with its dates where it starts. The province does not post them on highways inside city limits unless the city asks.

What counts as a winter tire

M+S (mud and snow) is the legal minimum. The 3-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol is what the province recommends for real snow and ice, and all-weather tires carry it. Either way you need at least 3.5 mm of tread.

Two is the minimum, four is right

The law asks for two matching winter tires on the drive axle. The province recommends four matched tires, and so do we, so the car grips the same front and back.

Studded tires: dates and all four

Studs are allowed October 1 to April 30 only. If you run them on the front, they must go on the back too. We don't stud tires; ask us about studless winter tires.

What happens if you skip it

On a signed route, police and ministry staff can turn you around and fine you. Chains on summer tires do not count.

Winter or All-Weather Tires?

Both are legal on BC winter routes when they carry the mountain snowflake. The difference is how much snow you drive in, and whether you want a spring changeover.

Best for Fraser Valley commuting

All-weather tires

From $84.95
  • Mountain snowflake, legal on signed routes
  • Stay on all year: no spring and fall changeover
  • Built for rain, slush and the odd snowfall we get in town
  • Less grip than a true winter tire on ice and deep snow

Common Questions

At Kingdom Auto & Detail, new winter tires start at $74.95 per tire, and we have 4,689 winter tires on hand in 80 sizes. Buy them here and mount and balance is $35 a tire, or $30 a tire on a set of four. Four 185/65R15 winter tires installed come to $496.18 out the door, including mount and balance, the $6.50 BC tire levy per tire, GST and PST. Every price is on the tire before you order.

Not by law to drive around town. Abbotsford and the rest of the Lower Mainland are not designated winter tire areas, and Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley is not signed. You do need them, or chains, on signed routes: Highway 5 (Coquihalla) and Highway 3 east of Hope from October 1 to April 30, and Highway 1 north of Hope and Highway 99 to Whistler from October 1 to March 31. If you drive up the Coquihalla, to the Interior or to the mountains, or you leave early on frosty mornings, put them on.

Before your first trip on a signed highway after October 1, and in town once daytime temperatures stay below about 7 degrees, which in the Fraser Valley is usually mid-October to early November. Below that, a winter tire compound stays soft and grips better than an all-season.

Yes. BC accepts tires marked M+S or with the 3-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol, as long as they have at least 3.5 mm of tread. The province recommends the mountain snowflake symbol for real winter conditions, because M+S is only the legal minimum.

Yes, if they carry the 3-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol and have at least 3.5 mm of tread. Every all-weather tire we list is marked that way. They stay on all year, so there is no spring and fall changeover.

Often, yes. Call (778) 666-6011 with your tire size and we will tell you if we can take you in today. If you order online first, we will have your tires and a bay ready when you book.

If your winter tires are already on their own rims, the swap is $60 for all four. If they have to come off the rims and be remounted and balanced, it is $40 a tire. We set the pressures and check tread depth while they are off.

Yes. When you buy your tires from us, mount and balance is $35 a tire ($30 a tire on a set of four), a 4-wheel alignment is $125 and four TPMS sensors are $200. Those are the prices our online tire cart charges. If you bring your own tires, it is $40 a tire to mount and balance, alignment from $150 and $210 for four TPMS sensors. To buy online, search your size at /tires, add your tires and tick installation in the cart; the price at checkout is the price you pay.

Four. BC requires at least two matching winter tires on the drive axle, but the province recommends four evenly matched tires, and so do we. Two winter tires on the front only make the back end slide first in a turn or a stop.

No, we don't stud tires. We can recommend studless winter tires with the 3-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol: they are legal on every signed BC route all winter and have no stud date limits. Call with your size and how you drive, and we will suggest a tire that fits.
